14-point Oakland moving checklist

Tip: Check off each item as you go.

  1. Confirm your move date & time window. Morning starts are best for parking and freight elevators.
  2. Plan curb space (permits/postings). Oakland uses an Obstruction Permit to reserve space with temporary “No Parking” signs; post ahead of time per city guidance.
  3. Get your COI squared away. Many buildings require a Certificate of Insurance. We provide COIs at no charge with any special wording.
  4. Book elevators or loading docks. Confirm freight windows and padding requirements with management.
  5. Map the walk path & staging area. Clear hallways, measure tight doorways, and stage boxes near the entry.
  6. Label boxes by room and priority. High-contrast labels (KITCHEN, BED 2); mark FRAGILE as needed.
  7. Pack a first-night kit. Essentials: meds, chargers, basic tools, toiletries, bedding, a few dishes, pet supplies.
  8. Protect furniture. Pre-disassemble where helpful; tape labeled hardware bags to each piece.
  9. Handle parking conflicts. Double-check sweeping, meters, bus zones, hydrants, and time limits.
  10. Photograph valuables & electronics. Photos help with reassembly and inventory; keep remotes/cables together.
  11. Separate do-not-pack items. IDs, laptops, jewelry, and documents stay with you.
  12. Confirm crew size & estimate. Written estimate should itemize labor, materials, travel time, any permit/COI fees.
  13. Plan for kids & pets. Create a calm space or sitter so loading zones stay clear and safe.
  14. Final walk-through. On move day, brief the crew lead on access, fragile items, and unload priorities.

Oakland specifics (so move day goes smoothly)

  • Rockridge / Temescal: High parking demand—post early and choose morning starts.
  • Jack London: Many buildings use docks/freight elevators; have the building contact handy.
  • Montclair & the hills: Narrow/steep streets—tell us about access so we size the truck/staging correctly.
  • Lakeshore / Grand Lake: Weekend lake traffic—mid-week bookings make curb space easier.

Day-of timeline (quick reference)

  • Before arrival: Check posted signs, hold elevator, clear paths, stage boxes near entry.
  • Arrival: Walk-through with the crew lead; confirm rooms, fragile pieces, disassembly.
  • Load: Doors/floors protected; furniture blanket-wrapped; boxes by room. Keep first-night kit with you.
  • Unload: Direct by room; save floor-plan tweaks for the end to stay on schedule.

Costs to expect

Local Oakland moves are typically billed hourly by crew size + materials used + travel time (including the return drive). Your estimate should include:

  • Labor by crew size and hours
  • Travel time & any fuel/permit fees
  • Packing materials (if used) & debris haul-away (if requested)
  • Optional storage or extra stops

When storage helps (and how it works)

Between leases, during renovations, or if dates change last-minute, storage can bridge the gap. We pick up, photo-label, and vault items in our SF warehouse, then deliver to your new place when you’re ready.
